Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|

Casey’s story began for us in November 2007. We are empty
nesters now, had always had Labradors when we were
raising our family and had recently lost our beloved yellow Lab ,
Kelly, at the age of 13. We knew we wanted another Lab and
had just completed the adoption and foster family application
process with Brookline. This is where our path with Casey
coincides. A passing motorist saw Casey being thrown from
a car, rescued her from the roadside and took her to an SPCA
shelter. At that point, The Brookline Labrador Retriever
Rescue group intervened, sending an urgent plea to their local
volunteers seeking a temporary home for Casey until a
permanent adoptive family could be found. Even though she
hadn’t suffered any serious injuries when thrown from the
car, Casey carried physical scars from long-standing
mistreatment and neglect, and she desperately needed time
to heal. So, we volunteered to give Casey her foster home.
Little did we know that once we took her into our home, we
would never be able to part with her.
From her first day with us, we could see that Casey was special – we found her to be sweet, gentle, eager to please her human
family, completely housebroken, and familiar with routine commands. Initially she was very quiet and seemed most comfortable if
she could tuck herself into a corner of a room, usually behind furniture. Over the following few weeks, we watched her heal
physically as well as blossom into a playful, confident lady. Our vet thinks Casey is about 6 years old, but she has the mojo now of
a fit and healthy 2 year old. She loves her walks, playing ball and just being in our company. She has quite an interesting approach
to playing ball - it doesn’t include any fetch and return routine - it’s more along the lines of a wide receiver catching a pass and then
artfully dodging everyone on her way to the end zone. We officially adopted Casey in January. She is a perfect fit for us, and it has
been very rewarding to give such a wonderful dog a second chance.
