Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue
Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
Toni’s story is one of patience. Those of you who follow our web site must be wondering what happened to Toni. Well, here is her
wonderful story of love. Toni came to Brookline at the age of 7, when her family realized that she deserved a better life than she was
living. At that time, Toni was sharing an outdoor kennel with her elderly yellow lab buddy. They lived on a farm and often were allowed to
romp and play on the farm. Basically they were outside dogs—come rain or shine. On very cold winter days, they were put in the barn.
While most Brookline adoptions move fairly quickly, I soon found that Toni required a special placement that would take longer. At the
time, she was very reactive to other dogs, cats, and strangers. Several trial placements did not work out because of this. But Toni’s
family never gave up and neither did Toni.

Over the years, there were frequent visits to Toni to update her PetFinder biography and to shoot new photos. How could I help Toni find
a home? About a year ago, Toni’s best friend passed away and left her all on her own. While Toni now was able to sleep in the
basement and to visit her family upstairs on occasion, she still was basically an outside dog.

Then one day, we received an application from a family who said they were only interested in adopting Toni. Imagine my surprise.
There were many questions and a serious look at whether the family knew what they were in for. But yes, the family had previously had
a dog that reacted like Toni and they were well prepared for her. This new family wanted to give her the life she has always wanted and
deserved—a life as a member of a family.

From the moment of introduction, it was a match made in heaven. Toni has found her fur-ever home. She sleeps on the couch, plays
with the family’s toddler, and generally lives the life that she has always dreamed about. It doesn’t matter that she is now almost 10
years old. Brookline has helped Toni find the family she deserves. She is living the good life. The old adage is true…. Sometimes the
best things are saved for last.
