Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
mammary tumors and the testing of the large "fatty" tumor on her chest showed it to be a grade two carcinoma. All four lumps were
removed and she was spayed.. Three of the lumps were cancerous. About a week after her surgery Spirit started having trouble
keeping food down and her appetite dropped off.. She came to work with me at Landisville Animal Hospital almost daily for more
than a week. And she loved going to see the girls there. They sat on the floor and feed her baby food right out of their hands if that
was what it took to get her to eat. She was such a good girl and patiently endured countless blood tests, medications, and x-rays.
But she wasn't getting any better. It was decided to give her one more weekend and if her condition didn't improve we had no choice
but to put her to sleep on Monday. I sat with her all weekend long just petting her and telling her what a wonderful girl she was. She
slept in bed with us that Sunday night. I guess Spirit had decided it wasn't her time. She had too many people loving her and
sending her good thoughts. That Monday morning I woke to find Spirit perky and happy and hungry again. And she hasn't slowed
down since! She amazed us all.. This summer this beautiful girl even went swimming in the doggy swimming pool at Sunhill
Kennel with her dog brother and sister, Spenser and Molly. She loves bouncing around like a puppy in the park, sleeping in bed,
and just being a loved member of our family. She's even starting to learn how to play, something she just never got to do before. We
officially "flunked" foster care this spring when we adopted our girl Spirit.. Sometimes failure can be a good thing. Everyday we get to
share with this happy girl is a gift. It seems that old adage is true-some peoples' garbage is other folks' treasure. We will always be
grateful to all the wonderful people at Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue and the caring, fabulous staff at Landisville Animal
hospital.. Spirit never would never have had a chance without their help and support. Who ever named this spunky girl all those
years ago really could not have picked a better name. She truly is "The Amazing Spirit!"
Spirit
We met Spirit for the first time in early February 2005. She was an old lab/shepherd mix
of 11 years, who could not have been more aptly named and has proven time and again
that she can overcome whatever the world throws at her. Spirit had a large tumor on her
chest which Brookline was told had been checked by a vet and was just a fatty tumor and
that she was spayed. When Brookline got involved with this baby her living conditions
were described as "gruesome." She was left, locked in one room, alone, in a home that
was falling down around her. No heat and no companionship. Her owner could no
longer care for her and would "stop by" every few days to throw food on the floor and let
her out. Needless to say, she was eating the food off the floor where her own waste
would lay. I am not clear on how long this gorgeous girl had to live like this, but it is
amazing how quickly she adapted to our household of two labs, five cats, and four birds,
plus my husband, my son, and myself.. In the car on the ride home and for the first
several hours she was so overwhelmed she couldn't sit still and panted so heavily I was
scared she was going to have a heart attack! She came into our home filled with noise,
activity, and animals after being so severely neglected …no wonder she was so
stressed! After a few rocky days and a couple of frantic phone calls to Brookline, our girl
Spirit started to settle in. As we started to get to know her the one word that kept
describing her was "amazing," She has been amazing me since I first met her and
continues to amaze me to this day. Surprisingly, by the middle of February our "spayed"
eleven year old foster girl was in heat.. While Dr. Carla Douple was examining her she
found two mammary lumps. By the time Spirit had her surgery there were three
