Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue
Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
During the winter of 2006, my wife and I decided to find a companion dog for our
5-year-old chocolate lab named Bear. It was our experience that Bear was a less
hyper and more content dog when he had a canine friend in the house or in the
yard with him. As a person who had grown up with labs, I knew the perfect fit
would be another lab. As I did a preliminary search online, I came across Pet
Finder, which led me to Brookline Lab Rescue. I contacted a Brookline volunteer
on the phone and explained that we were interested in an older, housebroken
dog. It was our feeling that an older, more mature dog would be easier to handle.
Also, we knew the difficulties that rescues face when trying to adopt out older
dogs. After our background checks and being approved for adoption by Brookline,
we expressed our interest in several beautiful dogs that we felt might be a good
fit for us and Bear. Following about two weeks of back and forth, we were
matched up with an 8-year-old black lab named Phoenix. The story of this dog
was that she had one previous owner who loved her very much but the owner
could no longer give Phoenix the life and environment she deserved. We met
Phoenix in the middle of March at a central meeting area. On that morning, my
wife, Bear and I had an opportunity to spend time with Phoenix and her owner.
After confirming that she was a great dog, we were able to take her home to stay
with us and see if she liked us as much as we liked her. Thankfully, she did.

Phoenix has been with us since March, and the whole experience has been
wonderful. She is a sweet, gentle dog who absolutely loves retrieving balls in our
backyard. She is a little unsure around strangers but in time warms up to
everyone she meets. Also, she enjoys playing and sleeping next to her new
"brother" Bear. Overall, the adoption process and experience has been so
rewarding for everyone involved. I would encourage anyone looking for a new dog
to try the Brookline Lab Rescue adoption process.
