Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue
Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
Hi! My name is Nona. Before I was born, my mommy's owner had to move and couldn't
take my mommy with him. He left my mommy with his mom. That's where my brothers
and sisters and I were born. Our owner's mom was going to take all of us to the local
shelter. But the people at the shelter said us puppies needed to stay with our mommy for
at least 8 weeks - and they didn't have room to keep all of us for that long. They told her to
contact the great folks at Brookline Lab Rescue. I sure am glad cos I didn't want to live in
a shelter! When I was two weeks old, we all moved to our Brookline foster home. It was
great! We had two foster moms who thought we were the most awesome little things
they'd ever seen. As soon as I met them, I made my decision. Life at our foster home was
great. We had three other dogs to play with - and a cat, too! We also had tons of company.
The neighborhood kids came to visit us every day. The really nice lady next door took care
us when our foster moms were at work. A bunch of Brookline volunteers came over to
play with us and give us hugs and kisses. It was great. I knew I'd made the right decision.
My foster moms loved watching our mommy take care of us. They called her Sweet Zoey
Girl. Oh yeah, my mommy's name is Zoey! Us puppies didn't have names yet and people
told our foster moms not to name us or they'd get too attached. So, they just started
calling us nicknames because of the way we looked - like Brown Dog and Socks and Tux
and Blaze and Blue and Rottie. I was the last one to get a nickname. When my foster
moms realized I was the only one without a nickname, they decided to call me Nona -
short for "No Name". I didn't mind. I didn't care what they called me. I'd already made my
decision. Everyone asked my foster moms how they would let us go and which one of us
they were going to keep. They kept saying "We are NOT keeping a puppy!" Everyone
laughed at them. I knew I had some work to do because of my decision. So whenever my
foster moms fed us, I wouldn't go to the bowl with all my brothers and sisters. Instead, I
Nona
would sit and look at my foster moms - and tilt my head. They loved that. I could see their hearts melting! It was working. When they
held me, I gave them lots of kisses. I acted really sweet, like a little princess. And it worked! When I was six weeks old, my foster
moms - I mean my Mamas - told everyone they were going to keep me! I don't know what took them so long. I'd made that decision a
long time ago. But I sure was happy they figured it out. I have a great life now with my Mamas, my doggie brothers, my cat brother,
and a bunch of fosters that come stay with us. I tell all of the fosters to do the head tilt - maybe it will work for them, too! I have a great
life thank to Brookline Lab Rescue and all those awesome volunteers! Oh yeah, my name is still Nona…..but now my Mamas call me
Princess Nona!
