Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|

We brought Nala home in December, right before Christmas. We were not sure how it would work out because we have another
Lab named Rosie who was three years old at the time. She had been alone for her whole life and never had to share our family's
affection. Also we have a six year old (now seven) son who has autism. David loves Rosie, but would he be able to handle a
second dog in his life just as well? We were pretty sure that everything would work out, but you never know. The last time we wrote
to you about Nala, we mentioned that we had been having a small problem. Nala had gotten past us a couple of times and run out
the front door. She ran around the neighborhood for a while until we could corral her. We were concerned and working on training
her not to run, because David was having trouble understanding that he had to worry about Nala running out the front door. Rosie
had never had this problem. Two wonderful things have happened. First, David became worried about what could happen to his
new doggie if she ran away. He did not want her to get lost, hurt or scared if she couldn't find her way to her new home. He told us
that he loves Nala just like Rosie and wants to protect her. Second, we think Nala now knows this is really her home. The last two
times she has gotten past someone at the door (the older kids friends opened the door and forgot we have dogs) she behaved
differently. First, she came right back and waited at the door to come back in. The second time she just stayed at the door until
someone closed it! I think she has decided that there is no place else she would rather be than home with her family.
Nala is just a great dog. She shows so much affection to all of us. She and Rosie now lay together all the time. They look like
Yin-Yang, the Chinese symbol. Nala only wants to give and be given love, which we have done in abundance here. We are so
happy that she is our dog. Nala and Rosie play together constantly. Rosie was definitely a little jealous of the new girl for a while,
but got over it in just a few months. They are now inseparable and best friends. Both dogs watch out for and protect the whole
family, especially their special friend, David. We truly believe that our dogs have made a huge difference for him. Having not just
one relationship, but two, with his dogs has definitely helped him to understand how to connect with other living beings. This is
crucial for autistic kids.
We were very lucky to get a dog like Nala. She has been so easy to train and love. She is very smart and seems to be able to
understand us very well. She has an exuberant personality that is infectious. Nala was a little hyper when she first arrived, but has
calmed down considerably now that she has settled in. I think that she knows how lucky we all are to have found each other. You
can't help but be happy and playful when she is around. When Nala comes over to sit with you, she can't get close enough. She
tries to sit right on top of you sometimes. Here are some pictures of our girls. Anyway I just wanted to let you know that we are very
happy.
