Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue
Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
Brookline received a call one winter night about a 10 year old yellow female lab who had
been dropped off at their shelter when the family was moving and could not take her. She
had been at the shelter for two weeks with no interest in her for adoption. If we did not want to
take her into our rescue and place her in one of our foster homes they were going to have to
put her to sleep due to the lack of interest in her and running out of room for the younger
dogs coming into the shelter. So Brookline put out a call for anyone interested in fostering
this girl, and that is where we come in. I decided that this old girl needed a second chance at
life and still had a lot of love to give a family. So on one cold night in February she was
sprung from the shelter and was taken to a foster home until we could make arrangements
to get her to my house. February 27th we opened up our home to this sweet girl. She came
to us very confused, where did my family go and why am I moving around so much? She was
very tired and depressed. Within the next two days she developed kennel cough. She could
barely breath out of her nose and had green discharge coming out of her nose that just
would not stop. I had her to the vet for an emergency appointment at 10:30pm one night, I
thought she was going to die on me. She had to be on three rounds of antibiotics, IV fluids
for dehydration and a steroid injection. It took about four weeks before she was totally over
the kennel cough. What an ordeal for this old gal to have to bare. She also had a lot of pain in
her hips so we got her started on some arthritis medicine and pain pills until the arthritis
medicine kicked in. We had to give her general anesthesia to have her teeth cleaned and polished due to the amount of tarter that
had built up after years of neglect. She was having trouble eating her teeth and gums hurt so much. Later that month Jillian started
having urination mishaps in the house and was drinking a lot of water, the vet wanted to have her tested for Cushing's disease, so
we put her in the hospital for an overnight stay, they performed the testing the next day. Thank goodness the test was negative.

This girl had been through the mill and the thought of shipping her off to another home just did not seem fair, she had become so
attached to us and was in a routine we could not bare to make her start all over again. So on mothers day weekend we adopted
her. She now lives happily along with our first resident yellow girl Holly who just turned twelve on Oct. 13th, 2007. Jillian loves to go
for walks now that she is pain free from her arthritis, and is connected to her human mommy at the hip. She loves to eat and go for
car rides as well. Jillian gets to go to grandma & grandpas to play with their black lab Jazzy and to go swimming in the kiddie pool,
well Jillian just likes to wade in the pool.

So just goes to show you the older dogs have a lot of life in them and can fill your life with lots of love and companionship. Never
count out the elders. Thank you Brookline for helping to give Jillian a second chance to give a family lots of love and
companionship, she is a wonderful loving girl and a great addition to our family.
