Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|

We adopted our Honey Bun in the summer of 2007. Our beloved lab, Hershey, had to be put to sleep in February of 2007 and even
though I had declared that I was not getting any more dogs I was drawn to the Brookline website. We filled out our application with
the help of Brookline’s volunteer, Amey, and started the process. I was religious about clicking on the available dogs each day
and finally found one I was interested in, Honey Bun, only to be told that someone else was in the process of adopting her. Later,
Amey wrote us and told us that Honey Bun was indeed available for adoption and we met her and really liked her personality.
The initial three weeks after we brought her home were hard on all of us and thank goodness Amey stayed calm and contacted
me almost daily. I won’t lie and say I didn’t think about returning her to her foster parents. Honey suffered from separation anxiety
and seemed so sad in the beginning that it almost broke my heart. Again, Amey calmed us all down and just kept saying we
needed a little more time. Brookline knows their labs because after about three weeks everything fell into place and we are dippy
over this dog. She goes with me almost everywhere and I found a wonderful pet sitter when that is not possible.
Honey is eleven and I encourage everyone to give these older dogs a chance. She is so ornery and gets into everything when she
thinks my attention is not being devoted to her entirely. I have had her bring me my checkbook, a hot pad, my Weight Watcher’s
book (I told her if she spread my weight around, there was going to be real trouble), and numerous socks. She is always so
proud of herself and it makes me laugh. She passed obedience training with flying colors and I don’t care if my daughter said that
everyone passes that pays their money. Our trainer did not say she was the best behaved dog she had ever seen, but she did
say she was the oldest that had ever come to class and one of the sweetest. Thank you Brookline for bringing us together with
this wonderful dog.
