Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|

My husband and I spent many evenings discussing the possibility of a dog for our family, unsure if we wanted to make the commitment
and questioning the feasibility within our lifestyle. Over the summer we vacationed for a couple of weeks at the Delaware shore and a
family had two small puppies; one yellow lab and the other black. After our kids spent hours playing with these pups I finally could see
the type of dog that would fit in with two energetic boys. I discovered the Brookline website and numerous times a day I would log on to
see if any new dogs had been added. When I saw Archie's (Puppy Boys) face, I knew he was the dog for us. He was still very young (1
½); not too big (60lbs) - and ready to be part of an active and loving family.
When we went to meet Archie for the first time, my husband spotted him sitting in the back of a Jeep, looking out the window, unaware
of the excitement that was ahead for him that day. We knew immediately that was our dog - a beautiful black lab/pointer mix with a regal
face and white markings on his broad chest. After meeting him that day, we knew there was no going back. While driving home with this
"Big Dog" in our car I was scared to death. I have never had a dog and it felt similar to taking a baby home for the first time… but lots
bigger! Almost immediately he seemed comfortable in our home and the kids fell in love with their "Big Dog."
We are truly a lucky family to have found Archie. Accepting a rescue dog into your home is filled with uncertain possibilities, but we can
honestly say we have never had anything but joy from him. He is very well behaved in the house, sleeps on his dog bed all night, greets
you in the morning, rarely barks and has incredible patience for the countless number of children petting him. Our kids are learning how
to take care of him and accepting increased responsibility. Archie loves to play catch and retrieve, play with the kids, go on walks and we
recently discovered the Okehocking preserve were he can really be a dog in all his glory… swimming, tracking and running free. My
husband and I take him with us while running errands, etc. (something I never thought we would do) and sits in the back cargo area of
our vehicles, enjoying the ride and being with his family.
Archie truly has been a wonderful gift. We are especially grateful to our Brookline volunteers, Mary and Peggy McGee. They have offered
so much great advice and helped considerably during our transition.
