Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue
Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
Maggie
Maggie’s is truly a Cinderella story.  Born into a puppy mill, as a baby she wandered into the wrong
litter; the whelping mother attacked poor Maggie, leaving her face and jaw severely disfigured and
blind in one eye.

Because of her looks, the puppy mill owner kept Maggie for breeding purposes.  The poor girl lived
most of her life outside often on a chain, never being bathed, birthing litters every six months, and
never getting any exercise.

When she was no longer useful to the breeder, he would have put her down except for the efforts of
a local woman who rescues breeding dogs from the area’s puppy mills and  works with local
rescues to place them into homes.

When Maggie came into the rescue her back was swayed from lack of exercise, she smelled
terribly since she’d never had a bath, and she had a nasty, itchy rash.  She had to learn to walk up
and down stairs, be trained to pee outside, to ride in a car, and to meet all sorts of different people.
But never once did she show any sign of being unhappy.

Maggie has no reason to be so loving and trusting—but she is.  She loves life:  chasing butterflies
in the backyard; jumping down two or three steps at a time; or going for long walks in the cranberry
bogs.  She loves sleeping on her own—indoor—doggie bed.  She has three Labrador companions
who like to snuggle up with her.  She’s learned how to travel and enjoys visits with family and
friends.  She’s gentle with everyone, babies and the elderly.

For the first seven or so years of her life, Maggie was treated like the ugly step-sister, but now she
lives like a princess!
