Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|

Sara is a sweet, beautiful 8 month old girl who literally ran into some bad luck. She was out running in
after it, crossing the road and was hit by a snowplow. Her family rushed her to the vet but got the bad
news that she would require extensive surgery to repair 2 broken bones in her front leg. The family was
given the choice of surgical repair or an amputation with an estimate of $800.00 – 3,000.00! The
rehabilitation after surgery would require her to be limited to short leash walks several times a day, no
stairs and no playing for 6 weeks. Sara’s family was heartbroken because they couldn’t afford the
surgery and knew they would not be able to do the required follow-up care with 3 young, active boys in
the home. They didn’t know what to do. Luckily the vet gave them Brookline’s information. After
meeting Sara, we knew why the family was working so hard to find a way to help her. She greeted us
enthusiastically dragging her casted leg along behind her. We knew we had to help Sara so we
mobilized our volunteers to get a foster home for her who would be able to bring her through the
rehabilitation that she needed to properly heal from the surgery. We called the orthopedic specialist to
get her surgery scheduled ASAP. Brookline has committed to giving her the best chance possible and
since the vet gave her a good prognosis for the repair because of her age and the clean break in the
bones, we decided to opt for the much more expensive surgical repair. We know this will offer her the
best life possible because it will be less stress on her joints through the years so she won’t develop an
early onset of arthritis due to overuse. Please help us with Sara’s success story by sending a donation
to the Bright Horizon’s Fund. It’s because of our medical fund that we are able to help these dogs in
need and give comfort to their families.

UPDATE:
Sara has tested positive for Parvovirus! She will need to remain hospitalized in isolation for an additional
4 – 5 days in the hopes that she can fight this virus. This could cost an additional $2500.00 to continue
her treatment.
Parvovirus is a contagious and often fatal disease that dogs are routinely vaccinated for. Please be sure
to keep your pets up to date on all of their vaccines.
Sara is now 11 months old. She is still being followed by the orthopedic surgeon who repaired her
shattered elbow in February. Since her surgery, she has been in a foster home with restricted activity,
starting with several 10 minute walks a day. Sara saw the surgeon again this week. He said that Sara is
98% healed and is now allowed to run. It was great to see her sprinting around the yard enjoying her
new found freedom! She continues to be restricted from roughhousing with kids or other dogs and will
have another follow-up with the surgeon in 6 weeks. By the end of summer, Sara should be looking for
her forever home!
