Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes

walk up stairs. She had NEVER been bathed and had serious skin rashes.
Because of her hard living and lack of medical care, the rescue’s expenses to help Maggie have been
more than anticipated. Despite a serious upgrade in housing, she has a severe skin condition, treatable
only with antibiotic as well as suffering from seasonal allergies, which exacerbate her rashes.
More significantly, her scarred eye may have glaucoma, which may be so severe as to require surgery
and removal of the eye. She will be seeing a specialist to diagnose her best options.
Despite all this, Maggie is the most trusting and loving dog ever. Even for a lab she’s extremely devoted--
especially around children. She’s learned the joy of running off a chain and loves to go for long walks.
She had a sway back when she first came into care, but now her physique is quite athletic—her favorite
exercise involves a penchant for chasing squirrels.
Because Labs are so popular, they are very frequently bred commercially. When a puppy mill breeder no
longer sees a financial value in the dogs, they typically come to a dire end. By taking these labs in, BLRR
provides them with a happy and safe life for many years to come. But this has a cost which can’t just be
covered with love and protection—there are real financial implications to rescuing puppy mill breeders.
Because puppy mill rescue dogs have not had ANY healthcare, they come with unanticipated problems.
While Maggie did not have the emotional problems that many puppy mill dogs have, she has had far
more health issues than BLRR generally anticipates. While Maggie is now living happily and securely in
a home with three other labs who are teaching her the ropes and while she loves sleeping on her own
cozy indoor bed, she needs medical care that exceeds what the rescue usually spends.
As Rod Stewart says, “Maggie, I wish I’d never seen your face.” Now that you’ve looked, can you say no?
Can’t you give a little to help Miss Maggie as the rescue helps her recover from years of abuse? She
sure has earned it!
Brookline when she was rescued from a lifetime serving as a breeding dog in a Pennsylvanian puppy
mill. Bad as it sounds, living outdoors year round (often on a chain) and making puppies for her whole
life weren’t the worst things that happened to Maggie before being rescued.
As a little puppy she wandered into the wrong litter while another mother was birthing; this dog attacked
poor Maggie and ripped at her face, leaving permanent disfigurement. Her jaw was dislocated and her
eye suffered scarring as well.
