Jake
                                                                              Jake's Story

We saw two green dots glowing in front of us.  We stopped the car.  In the middle of the road was a large,
black Labrador Retriever.  He moved to the side of the road and we looked at each other and said, “We
have to turn around.”  When we got to this gentle giant, I opened the door to check for his tags and he
jumped into the car.  He was ready to go and so happy to see us!  It was like we were his long lost
friends.  We did not know him, but he loved us from the minute he saw us.  The morning after we found
him, he sat down beside me, looked all the way through me with his soulful brown eyes and gently put his
paw on my knee.  It was as if he was saying to me, “Don’t worry, I’ll be okay.”

That was December 15.  We have since named him Jake and he has been at our house for 8 weeks.
Jake, who is estimated to be 4 or 5 years old, is the dog you want your dog to grow up to be.  He is such a
sweetheart and to our surprise Jake did not have tags or a microchip.  After contacting all local and
surrounding shelters, many vets, boarding facilities, and online services, posting notices and ads in the
paper we found no one had reported this wonderful companion missing.  We decided he would stay with
us until we found his owner or a permanent home for him.  That is when Brookline Labrador Retriever
Rescue stepped in to help. A visit to the vet and some x-rays and blood work indicated that Jake had Lyme
disease and two hind legs with knee injuries - one is new and the other must have occurred a few
months ago. Jake is on antibiotics for Lyme disease and needs expensive therapy and surgery on both
knees. We are now his foster home and his family consists of two female dogs, a cat, two older kids and
their parents.  As much as we, Jake’s “found” family love him, covering his medical costs is not possible
with two other dogs, a cat, and college-bound children. Additionally, one of the female resident dogs
refuses to accept Jake into the family.  Jake is very patient with everyone but would feel better in a family
where he can be the special dog to his special person.
                                                               Can you help Jake?

His size is large his heart is too, he happiest just sitting right next to you.
He’s had it tough but it doesn’t show, his eyes tell a story we’ll never know.
He‘s young in age and happy as can be, but he hurts now because of his knees.
Poor Jake has trouble with both ACL’s, how this happened sadly, he can’t tell.
Just look at his eyes and you’ll see his heart, he needs your help please give him a start.
With therapy & surgery he’ll be good as new, he deserves good years & more than a few.
What is given to him he’ll return ten-fold, with his love, devotion & memories to hold.
Brookline is there but Jake needs you, please send your donation to pull him through.
The donation fund is Bright Horizons, the address above & know Jake sends his thanks & love.
