Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|

Ace is an approximately 4 year old male chocolate lab that came
into Brookline foster care at the end of February. Ace suffered a
broken leg in April 2008 and, despite undergoing surgery, the
fracture never healed. Ace continued to limp on the leg for the
next 1.5 years until he reinjured it in December 2009. His
previous family couldn’t afford further medical care for Ace so they
surrendered him to a local shelter. Because of Ace’s medical
condition, the shelter made the decision not to place Ace on the
adoption floor and only surrender him to a rescue where he
would receive the necessary medical care. Lucky for Ace,
Brookline intervened and he has had a busy couple of weeks.
Immediately after coming into rescue, Ace saw a local orthopedic
surgeon to determine the best course of action for his leg. After
some initial tests, Ace was diagnosed with a serious staph
infection in the bone of his broken leg. Unfortunately, this made
saving the leg impossible since medication alone would not
guarantee that the infection was cleared up. So, amputation was
the only option for Ace. Again, luck was on Ace’s side because
when the doctors went to do the amputation, they noticed that the infection had started to spread into the
muscle of Ace’s torso. They removed the infected muscle and the fractured limb and they believe Ace has
an excellent chance at a 100% recovery.
It has been approximately two weeks since Ace’s surgery and he is doing extremely well. He is still on
limited activity but he is getting up and down fine and he is walking well. His disposition has not changed
and he remains an extremely happy and friendly dog.
To date, Ace’s medical expenses total approximately $4,000. Brookline is a non-profit volunteer
organization funded entirely by donations. Our ability to help Ace is dependent upon the support of people
like you. If you would like to help Ace and others like Ace, please consider making a donation to our Bright
Horizons Fund.
