If you are in our coverage area, the next step is to fill out our application. You can either fill our online
application or print an application and mail it in to us. This and the small processing donation are sent to
the address on the application. When the application is received it is then sent to the volunteer in your area
who will contact you (usually by email) within 10 days of receipt of your application to schedule a home visit.

The home visit is your chance to meet the BLRR volunteer who will be working with you to find just the right
Lab and our opportunity to talk with you about the kind of Lab you are looking for in a companion and
discuss with you the dogs we have available. We will also ask you some additional questions and try to
maintain a dialog with you throughout the
adoption process. Our goal is to make sure that the dogs we
place are going to homes which will suit their individual personalities and which will last a lifetime – their
forever home.

After the home visit, the volunteer will send a summary of the visit to our board, which is voted on in less
than a week. Once approved, you will continue to work with the BLRR volunteer to find a Lab that will fit into
your home and lifestyle. Once you find that dog on our web site, the next step is an introduction with that
dog.

Arrangements will be made for you (and any of your existing dogs) to meet the prospective adoptee dog. If
introduction goes well you may take him/her home with you to begin the three week mandatory Pre-
Adoptive period. All dogs that are placed are considered to be in their Pre-Adoptive period for the first three
weeks and a
Pre-Adoptive Agreement must be signed. We require the minimum Pre-Adoptive period to
give both you and the dog time to get to know each other, to help us insure that we have made a good
match. During the Pre-Adoptive period you will be required to take the dog to your vet, at your expense, for a
baseline health examination.

We ask that you give the dog the entire three-week period to decide if the match is a good one. First, the
dog will take at least three weeks for you to get to know him/her (the 3 weeks is a minimum but not a
maximum - if you haven't decided that the dog is a match at the end of three weeks the Pre-AdoPre-
Adoptive period can be extended). A sudden change in environment is stressful for a dog, so naturally the
dog will require a period of time to adjust to their new environment and routine. Giving the dog less than
three weeks is not fair to any of those involved in the adoption process.

At the end of the Pre-Adoptive period, if you decide that the Lab fits into your family and wish to finalize the
adoption, the BLRR volunteer will visit you again to see how the dog is fitting in and to insure that the
general situation meets all of the criteria in our Adoption Agreement. If these criteria are met, you will sign
the Adoption Agreement and pay the remainder of the
adoption donation. The dog will only become yours
after the Pre-Adoptive period when the
Adoption Agreement is signed.
