Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
|
Sparky,
Being a good looking dog and all maybe you can answer: My dog Copper is an inside dog, house broken, lots of walks, swimming,
etc. He even sleeps with me at night. My question is: When I am doing something in another room and he is in his favorite recliner,
he will bark and whimper till I come back in the room and give him a big hug or rub his head. Am I the one that is trained? He also
has a habit that when I run with him, if I am in front he will catch me and put his paw out to trip me.
What is that all about?
It can not be that he doesn’t get enough attention since he is the center of our lives. My son and I play with him all the time and hugs,
kisses etc.
Is he just this playful or are this all traits of the Walker Coonhound? He is just a big goof.
Thank you for your help,
Sherri, Copper’s mommy
P.S. You are really good-looking.

Hi Sherri,
Thanks for your email! It sounds like you and your buddy Copper have a lot of fun together. He sure
is a lucky dog getting all of that attention! I wish all dogs had a way cool family like you and your
son. We’ll get there someday! Spread the word about rescue!!
Anyway, on to your question. Copper sounds like a cool dog…and a smart dog. Yep, he has done a
great job training you! I wouldn’t mind having someone come into the room to pet me whenever I felt
the urge to be petted. I might have to give Copper a call to see how he managed that. Hee-hee!
With his techniques and my good looks, we could go places! The dogs of the world could unite and
take over the planet! Then we’d spend our days lounging in recliners while our humans waited on
us paw and foot….or would that be hand and paw? Paw and paw? Hmmm… Anyway, you get the
idea!
But ya know, as cool as that sounds, we dogs don’t really want to rule the world. This may sound
strange, but we’re actually happier when someone else is in charge. If you humans are the pack
leaders, we don’t have to worry about that “leader” stuff and we can focus on the important things like playing fetch and chewing on
bones.
I’m not a trainer or anything, but it kinda sounds like Copper is trying to be in charge. I can tell you’re a smart lady. After all, you know a
really good looking dog when you see one. Hee-hee! So, I’ll bet you already know that Copper shouldn’t be making the rules. Like I
said, Copper sounds like a really cool dog, but unless he’s also paying the mortgage, he shouldn’t be in charge of the household!
There are lots of things you can do to let Copper know that, as much as you love him, you are the boss, the head honcho, the big
mamma…whatever you want to call yourself. Some humans follow a plan known as “nothing in life is free” to keep the pack order clear.
That means we pups have to work for everything we get. Oh, don’t worry – I’m not stuck on the chain gang or anything like that! It just
means I have to sit before going outside or shake before I get a treat. No big deal. And it makes me feel better knowing my human is in
control. If this stuff is new to you, you should do some research and consult a trainer. Remember, I’m a very smart (and really good
looking) dog….but I am a dog, not a dog trainer so I can’t give you all the info you might need! You can find a trainer in your area on this
cool web site: www.apdt.com.
Tell Copper some changes are coming….but in the meantime, if he does manage to trip you, he should get video and post it on
YouTube! Hee-hee! Just kidding!
Thanks for writing, Sherri! Anyone else have a question? The Great Sparkdini has the answer!

Until next time…
Hugs and Sloppy Kisses,
Sparky
