Helping Labs Find Their Fur-Ever Homes
May 2006
a lot of really nice people who told me I was really sweet. This isn't so bad, I thought. Then things got weird. I started feeling sleepy… I
mean REALLY sleepy. I think they slipped me something! The next thing I remember, I was waking up and - you're not gonna believe this
- I had a lampshade on my head!! There must have been some wild party there! Bummer is I couldn't remember any of it. And the worst
part was that no one would help me take that lampshade off my head! The doctor told me my foster moms would be there soon to pick
me up. Cool, I thought - they'll get this thing off my head. But all they did was say "Oh Sparky!" and giggle. Silly Girls! Are they nuts?! I'm a
dog!! Not a lamp!! Get this thing off my head!!

Aahhh - looking back now, it's kind of funny because now I know what was going on that day! I've learned a lot since I was a kid. Hee-hee.
Don't sweat it, Buddy. You're not broken! When they say they're going to have you fixed, they mean they're going to have you neutered (or
for the ladies, spayed). I hear ya - why can't humans just say what they mean? I haven't figured that one out yet! Anyway, spaying is a
surgery to make sure a female dog can't get pregnant and neutering is a surgery to make sure a male dog can't get a lady pregnant. So
the doctor goes in and snips…. I know, I know - the thought of it makes most dudes cringe! But trust me, it's not bad. You'll sleep through
the whole thing. And once it's done, you can be carefree and not have to worry about any yippy puppies in your future! Being a dad would
really cramp my style, ya know? And those of us who have spent time in the lock-up know there are already WAY too many dogs out there
looking for homes. Preventing those "accidents" can help to decrease the number of puppers that end up in shelters…..and leave more
homes available for the puppers already there! Don't worry about any of those silly rumors about spaying and neutering. It won't make
you mean and it won't make you wimpy. I still have the same super-duper personality I've always had! And trust me; the ladies will still
love you! Getting spayed or neutered will also decrease your chances of getting some icky disease - like prostrate cancer or ovarian
cancer. Way cool! So, aside from the embarrassment of that ridiculous lamp shade, it's really not a bad thing. And even that lampshade
thing is bound to get you some extra treats and attention. Humans are such softies!

The Brookline folks make sure that all dogs brought into foster care are spayed or neutered prior to placement. It's just one more thing
they do to look out for us!

Take it easy, Buddy, and milk that lampshade thing for some extra treats!

Hey Buddy,
I feel for you, kid! I - the Great Sparkdini - had the same experience shortly after
moving to my Brookline foster home. Everything was going just fine. Then one day,
things got a little strange. First of all, my foster moms forgot to give me breakfast.
Silly girls! Then I went to get a drink of water, but the water bowl was gone! It just
disappeared. I know it used to be there, but it was gone. Well, I'm a smart guy and I
know there's more than one way to skin a cat. (Sorry feline friends - it's just an
expression!) So, I headed in to that big white water bowl in the bathroom. That water
is always colder anyway! I got a few slurps and then my foster mom came running in
and said "Sparky, No!" What's her problem? Can't a guy even get a drink of water
around here? Something strange was going on. Then my foster mom said it was
time to go to the vet so I could get fixed. I tried to tell them I wasn't broken. But those
humans are not always the most perceptive creatures, ya know?! Anyway, it meant I
got to go for a ride in the car so I was game. We drove to the doctor's office and I met

Dear Sparky,

The Brookline folks just bailed me out of the lock-up. They said the first thing on the agenda is to get me
"fixed". Huh?? I didn't know I was broken! What's that all about?
